Unit 10 Contemporary America
Nixon political cartoon
This cartoon shows Nixon holding up his famous " double peace" sign, but the words read "Foreign policy victories, and watergate coverup". It basically sums up the highlights of his presidency because he was a foreign policy master, but he also did attempt to coverup a scandel, and from there made it a scandel by refusing to forfeit the tapes of the Democratic national convention in the Watergate hotel.
It is signficant because he did achieve peace abroad in Veitnam, but he added fuel to the fire abroad with the watergate incident. The American public today doesn't acknoledge the fact that Nixon had some of the best foreign policy skills ever seen.

Nixon Resigns
This source is the farewell address President Nixon gives to the people of American before resigning from his spot as president. He attempts to hide the fact that he is leaving is due to the belief that he was apart of the scandal. He said that he reason for resigning was that the people needed a fill time president and congressmen which he couldn't give them that they deserve better. He believed that America now needed to focus on peace and stop the arms race. He meet with a group of his close friends that were in office before giving his farewell address and started to cry. He came to realization that he no longer had a strong political base and wouldn't make it into a second term as president. Nixon spoke highly of the soon to be president Ford, then wished Americans the best and to come together as one.
This is significant because this was the first time ever that a president had resigned his spot in office. It put an end to all the problems that were created by the Watergate Scandal. It also made it obvious that Nixon did in fact take part in the scandal and other incidents that he had been accused of. It shows how abusing power given to you can have long term negative affects. America could now move on from all questions about the president and scandal and have a fresh start.

This is significant because there was often times debate over whether certain rulings were constitutional or not and this was one. Many people attempted to reverse the rulings and get their rights but often times failed initially but at a future time the ruling would be reversed and deemed as unconstitutional. It demonstrates the many changes that this country has undergone in order to be as fair and just as possible for everyone and how far we have come as a country.
